Catherine Martinot-Bonjour initially began studies of architecture in 1980. But she quickly decided to study painting, and entered Martenot art school in Lyon. Pedagogy and teaching are very significant in her search and her personal evolution. After 3 years of study, Catherine finds her own style : a subtle proportioning of sobriety, spontaneousness and sensitivity.

Her main inspirers are Raoul Dufy and Henri Matisse. Matisse for his search of essential, the pictorial synthesis, the minimum of means for the maximum of results, and his taste for the South (Morocco, Tunisia). Dufy for the joy of life and the freedom which spout out of his painting, for the beauty of his watercolours, the transparency and the freshness of the colors.
